Digital detox: how to do one without losing your friends
Thinking about a digital detox? Here's how to pick the right level, what to prepare, and how to step away from your phone without stepping away from your friends.
What is a digital detox?
A digital detox is a set period where you step back from your phone, social media or screens in general. It can be one evening, a weekend, a week, or a whole month like No Phone November.
The point isn't to punish yourself. It's to notice what fills the space when the scroll is gone — and decide what you actually want back.
Choose your level
Start smaller than you think. A detox you finish beats one you quit on day two.
- Light: no social apps after 9pm, phone out of the bedroom.
- Social media detox: delete feed apps for a week, keep calls and messages.
- Weekend offline: phone off from Friday night to Sunday evening.
- Full detox: a month with a basic phone, or your smartphone locked away.
The problem nobody mentions: your friends live in your phone
Birthdays, phone numbers, the address of that party, every photo from last summer. For most of us, our phone is our address book, our calendar and our memory box. That's why a digital detox can feel lonely — putting the phone away feels like putting your people away.
So before you start, move what matters somewhere you can reach without a screen.
Your digital detox checklist
- Write down birthdays coming up in the next few months.
- Write down the numbers of the people you'd actually call.
- Tell your group chats when you're going offline and how to reach you.
- Plan one in-person meetup each week of the detox.
- Pick an offline replacement for the scroll: a book, a hobby, a sport.
- Decide in advance which apps come back afterwards, and how you'll use them.
Meet the Connection Book
We built the checklist into a book. The Connection Book is the offline version of Tribela: a page for every friend with their birthday, contact details, how you met, a moment you shared and space for a photo — plus a birthdays section for the whole year.
It's the easiest way to do a digital detox without losing touch, and it makes a meaningful gift. It's on Kickstarter now and arrives by Christmas. Join the movement: #BreakTheFeed and post a plain blue square.
Coming back on your terms
After a detox, many people realise they don't want zero social media — they want a better version of it. Tribela is free to use, with a feed that ends, no forced autoplay, no public popularity scores and no filters. Closer to your interests and the people you care about.
Put the phone down. Keep your people.
